About This Call
Community Housing Partners (CHP) is seeking artists to create two exterior murals for Witter Place Apartments, a 94-unit affordable workforce housing project in Alexandria, Virginia, located off Duke Street, a high-capacity transit corridor with 28,000 vehicles per day and a major bus route.
Mural A will be located on the east elevation facing Duke Street, measuring 24' wide by 36' high (864 square feet) across three stories on a white face brick façade. Mural B will be located on the south elevation facing Witter Field, measuring 103'-6" wide by 44'-4" high (4,588 square feet) across four stories on a fiber cement panel façade. Budgets are $20,000 for Mural A and $95,000 for Mural B. The goals for the murals are to raise awareness of families living in affordable housing, connect Witter Place to the larger Alexandria community, and encourage a vision forward with optimism, hope, and progress for residents and the community.
This call is open to artists and artist teams living and working in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria: realize income through the sale, performance, publication or commission of original works of art; have previously exhibited, presented, performed or published original works in museums, galleries or recognized art venues; have formal training or education in a field of art; or have received awards or recognition from arts juries or grant panels. Environmental design professionals such as architects or landscape architects can be considered artists if they meet these criteria. Top 3-5 finalists will be invited to submit concept designs and will receive a $500 stipend for design development. Applications must include contact information, resume (PDF, maximum two pages per team member), three relevant work samples with process descriptions, and a narrative describing how the artist will work collaboratively with the construction team to minimize disruption to the development schedule.
