About This Call

The Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Art in Public Places and the City of Jacksonville, Florida are soliciting artists for a Request for Qualifications for the Winton Drive and Legends Community Center Neighborhood Public Art Project. This national call seeks artists to address streetscape aesthetics with iconic and potentially interactive public art at two neighborhood sites. Artists are encouraged to explore ways to integrate public art with technology and renewable sources of energy such as wind and/or solar. Individual artists or artist teams may apply to address one or both sites.

The combined budget for both categories is $84,000. The Winton Drive Traffic Triangle budget is $50,000 and the Legends Community Center budget is $34,000. A single artist or artist team addressing both sites with a comprehensive environmental impact scheme would receive the full $84,000 for design, fabrication and installation. The artist budget is inclusive of travel to attend required site visits, public meetings, design team meetings and installation. For the two categories of environmental 3-D sculpture, preference will be given to artwork that incorporates lighting or luminescent elements and/or media arts or other digital interactive art. Jacksonville is interested in showcasing eco-friendly, forward thinking aesthetic designs that find solutions to environmental concerns, such as incorporating solar-powered lighting.

Artists may apply for any or all of three categories: Winton Drive Traffic Triangle Sculpture, Legends Community Center Sculpture, or Combined Category for both sites. If one artist is awarded both commissions, the two resulting works must be significantly different in appearance and effect. A nine-member Art Selection Panel made up of community representatives, city department representatives and arts professionals will select the artists and designs. Artists are required to attend public meetings in Jacksonville in April 2019 and should be prepared to meet and interact with local schools as part of the public process. Work sample requirements: 4-8 images, 0-1 audio file, 0-2 videos, for a total of 4-11 samples. Up to 3 applications allowed per artist.
