About This Call
Each summer the Visitor Center Artist Camp hosts Resident Artists from around the country for two weeks of camping, living cooperatively outdoors, working, playing, reflecting, and making art in conversation with the North Woods wilderness.
The Wild Clay Workshop leads residents through the entire process from prospecting for clay, through harvesting and mixing, to various firing processes. This workshop is taught by professional wild clay hunter and VCAC co-founder Amy Joy Hosterman, with assistance from ceramicist Caitlin Zachow. Independent Projects Artists in Residence have time and space to explore nature and work on their own independent art mediums, with support from artist and art educator Stephanie Howells and local UP geologist and artist Evan Lanese, who provide guidance, access to tools, and connections to resources.
The residency runs July 25 - August 8, 2026. Wild Clay Workshop costs $1,100; Independent Project Residency costs $900. Early bird pricing offers a $150 discount for applications submitted by March 1st. Includes shared studio space, 3 meals daily, maintained campgrounds, outdoor shower and bathroom facilities, trips to waterfalls and Lake Superior beach, and optional programming. All materials, firings, and tools are provided for the Wild Clay Workshop. All residents have access to basic shop tools and supplies. Adults of all creative backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply; the Wild Clay Workshop is intended for those with some clay experience. Space is limited to 12 total participants. Submissions are reviewed in the order received. An interview will follow application submission. Deadline to apply: May 1st. Contact Amy Hosterman at [email protected] or (612)385-2835.
