About This Call

TranSystems and kwED, for the City of Wichita, invite professional artists and artist teams with demonstrated experience completing durable public art and mural projects to submit qualifications for the Wichita Delano Multi-Modal Transit Facility.

Four art-opportunity locations exist within the Transit Facility, to be completed by June 2025: Element A - Lobby Feature Wall (mixed media installation including mural and/or wall-mounted relief sculpture, $42,500); Element B - Platform Walls/Mural (multiple wall segments in the bus queue area, $80,000); Element C - Tunnel Walls & Ceiling/Mural (corrugated metal panel surface, $44,500); Element D - Garage Screens/Patterns (large-scale architectural screen system with perforation patterns in weathering steel, $30,000). Total commissioned artwork budget is $202,000 plus stipend for finalists. The Transit Facility will be adjacent to Riverfront Stadium park in downtown Wichita's Historic Delano Neighborhood and will host a centralized bus hub with multi-level parking, charging stations, bike storage, and administrative functions.

Artists should create works responsive to neighborhood and project characteristics, furthering a sense of place, beauty, and humanity. Thematic considerations include Modern Transit, proximity to the Historic Chisholm Trail, and the "Wayfinding Trees" of the Delano neighborhood. Artwork must respond to site conditions and scale, and must include graffiti removal treatments/coatings. The selection process occurs in two phases: First Phase qualifies artists (2 finalists per Element A, B, C); finalists receive $1,000 stipend to develop concept proposals. Second Phase selects one artist per opportunity to execute professional agreements. Qualifications deadline: September 18, 2023, 11:59 PM CST. Finalists' design proposals due October 23, 2023. Submit 7-10 images of work samples via CaFE. Eligibility: National.
