About This Call
Artists will work with community members to design and install an asphalt mural at the Westwood Morrison Road intersection. The intersection will include bulb-outs marked with plastic bollards to extend space for people walking and biking, create community gathering areas, and slow traffic and shorten pedestrian crossing distances. This project is a partnership between Art Students League of Denver, Asphalt Art Initiative, BuCu West, City of Denver, Denver Streets Partnership, and The Trust for Public Land.
The project aims to create more pedestrian-friendly areas along Morrison Road and support local businesses and cultural institutions on the corridor, engage community in the long-term vision for streetscaping, reflect the local culture of Westwood, and create support for the Westwood Via Verde project. Artists will participate in Westwood's Cinco de Mayo festivities to meet with community members, gather input on images, and identify community volunteers to assist with painting. Designs will be finalized with a to-scale mock-up and submitted to DOTI for review and approval by May 15. Painting of the mural will coincide with the Frida Kahlo Festival at the location in July.
Selected artist(s) will receive a stipend of $7,500 to cover all design, materials (paint estimated at $4,200), and their time. DOTI will assist with the purchase of paint to ensure paints work on asphalt and complement the colors of the Westwood Via Verde project. Additional funds are available to cover snacks and marketing materials for community events. Proposals are open to emerging and established Colorado-based artists. Applicants should submit a simple schematic for possible murals, a detailed budget breakdown, experience working with community members and volunteers, CV/resume with current contact information, and up to five sample images of previous artwork. Proposals will be juried and selected by a panel representing the diversity of Denver's Westwood community.
