Western City Campus Plaza Public Art Project

The Boulder Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original work of art for the Western City Campus Plaza, located behind the pavilion building on Broadway and Alpine in Boulder, Colorado. The commission budget is approximately $300,000 USD. The selection panel has recommended either one site-specific artwork or several site-specific artworks to be integrated into the plaza.

The panel is looking for artwork that is playful, welcoming, kid-friendly, and provides a cultural connection to the campus. Works should be bright, colorful, and imaginative, creating a sense of belonging. The panel is open to interactive works with community engagement components. Artworks demonstrating the connection between human activity and the natural environment, and telling the story of the place geologically, socially, and ecologically are encouraged. Works should be pedestrian-scaled, three-dimensional, and suitable for outdoor display. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, using highly durable, low-maintenance materials that conform to city standards and ADA requirements.

Applicants must submit four digital images of previously completed artworks, a résumé (one to two pages), and a statement of interest (maximum 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Three finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals and be interviewed by the panel, receiving an honorarium of $2,000 for this work. The selected artist or artist team will collaborate with City of Boulder staff and the design team to finalize designs for installation. The project is open internationally to artists of all backgrounds. Colorado artists, emerging artists, and artists working in outdoor-suitable media are especially encouraged to apply.
