Western City Campus Parking Garage Stairwell Public Art Project

The Boulder Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original two-dimensional artwork for the Western City Campus Parking Garage Stairwell in Boulder, Colorado. The stairwell and elevator bay are located on the western side of the garage at the SW corner of Broadway and Alpine. The work will be visible to users of the stairwell and elevators and from the street. The commission budget is approximately $100,000 USD.

The selection panel is looking for a two-dimensional indoor artwork that serves as an inclusive gateway to the campus via the parking garage. Works that offer a cultural connection, are welcoming, and create a sense of belonging while telling the story of the place are encouraged. The artwork could include a community engagement component. Materials should be easy to clean and maintain, and suitable for indoor display. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, fabricating work from highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for public display and conforming to ADA standards.

Applicants must submit four digital images of previously completed artworks, a one to two-page résumé, and a statement of interest (maximum 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Three finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals and be interviewed by the panel, receiving an honorarium of $1,500 for this work. The selected artist or artist team will collaborate with City of Boulder staff and the design team when finalizing designs for installation. The budget of $100,000 is inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and contingency. Eligibility is open to Colorado artists. Emerging artists and mural artists are especially encouraged to apply. Teams may apply; if so, submit one résumé with one page per team member.
