About This Call
The Boulder Public Art Program seeks to commission an artist or team of artists to create two original works of three-dimensional suspended art for the Western City Campus Pavilion Lobby and Parking Garage Atrium in Boulder, Colorado. The Western City Campus Pavilion Building is located on the NW corner of Broadway and Alpine, and the Parking Garage Atrium is located directly across Alpine. The work will be visible to users of the buildings as well as from the street. The commission budget is approximately $450,000 USD.
The selection panel is looking for two suspended indoor artworks that will serve as a dynamic gateway to the campus. Artwork should create a distinct connection to the natural world and have a strong daytime and nighttime presence. Works that demonstrate the connection between human activity and the natural environment, and tell the story of the place—geologically, socially and ecologically—are encouraged. Materials should be easy to clean and maintain, and suitable for indoor display. All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance, fabricating work from highly durable, low-maintenance materials. Finalists are encouraged to consult with a professional conservator and ensure conformity with city standards of maintenance and durability, as well as ADA standards.
Applicants must submit four digital images of previously completed artworks, a résumé (one to two pages), and a statement of interest (maximum 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. Three finalists will be selected to create site-specific proposals and be interviewed by the panel; finalists will receive a $2,500 honorarium for this work. The selected artist or artist team will then collaborate with City of Boulder staff and the design team to finalize designs for installation. The budget of $450,000 is inclusive of all costs including design fee, consultation fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and any other project-related expenses. The application deadline is Friday, June 28, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. This project is open internationally to artists of all backgrounds. Colorado artists, emerging artists, and artists with experience creating suspended artworks are especially encouraged to apply. Teams may apply; if applying as a team, submit one résumé with one page per team member.
