About This Call
The Department of Campus Activities at Western Carolina University is seeking an artist to create a feature wall in their newest office space. The artist should ideally come from the Appalachian Region and utilize locally and renewably sourced materials to create a mountain-scape that reflects the University's context. A mixed-medium installation using metals, glass, stone, wood, and other materials sourced through recycling or renewable sources is desired.
The maximum space available is 11 ft. 6 in. wide by 7 ft. 9 in. tall. The wall is curved, and artists should consider this in their proposal. The wall is constructed of drywall with metal studs every 16 inches; each stud can hold 2 anchors rated for 25 lbs each. The maximum depth of the artwork cannot exceed 4 inches at any point. Submissions should include 2-6 images of previous work.
WCU has allocated a maximum of $16,000 for artist fees, materials, and installation, with $1,500 for hospitality and travel. The artist will install the piece under the supervision of Western Carolina University's Facilities Management Team to ensure adherence to campus safety and construction standards. Installation is anticipated to occur in Fall/Early Winter 2021 with completion before December 31, 2021, taking no longer than 5 business days. If utilizing colors, artists are encouraged to consult WCU's brand identity and visual identity standards. WCU reserves final say in major project decisions and will collaborate with the artist to refine the vision and final piece.
