About This Call

San Bernardino County Transit Authority (SBCTA) seeks to commission three artists or artist teams to design and execute original public artwork for transit shelters along the new West Valley Connector Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. The project runs west to east through Pomona, Montclair, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga. Selected artwork will be fabricated as perforated metal panels or windscreens incorporated into standard shelter designs.

SBCTA will select six artists to receive a $1,500 design honorarium to develop two black-and-white preliminary design concepts. Preliminary concepts will be reviewed by a selection committee, which will select three finalists. Finalists will receive $20,000 to revise and prepare final design documents and review material samples provided by the shelter fabricator. Artists or artist teams will not be compensated for travel expenses or time beyond the stated honorarium.

Preliminary design submissions must include an artist statement explaining the theme and references, plus a minimum of two black-and-white sketches or renderings showing all dimensions. The design must be constructible as a perforated metal panel, with no more than 4 inches of open space in any part, fitting within specified panel dimensions, and providing 60% opacity per safety requirements. Final design documents must be provided in PDF, vector, or Illustrator format. Finalists will be expected to attend meetings and work collaboratively with the design team for up to 18 months. Deliverables include design concepts (due April 29, 2022), progress drawings and artist statement (due May 20, 2022), final design documents (due June 10, 2022), written comments on full-size printed sample (due January 21, 2023), and written comments on 24-inch square sample panel (due September 1, 2023). Six honorarium artists will be notified by December 20, 2021, and three finalists will be notified by March 14, 2022.
