About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage seeks artists for a public art commission at West High School's new Career Technical Education (CTE) addition. One or two complementary art installations totaling $41,500 will be permanently installed at the remodeled school located at 1700 Hillcrest Drive in Anchorage. Project construction begins fall 2014 with completion by summer 2016; artwork installation is expected summer 2016.
Two potential locations are available: an exterior façade area above the main entrance (30' wide by 20' high) that could accommodate artwork attached to the building structure, and an interior location within the two-story glass-fronted addition adjacent to the main entrance. The jury is open to various artwork types including suspended work, art glass, and bas-relief sculpture, provided installations are safe and durable. The school's themes focus on career technical fields including medical, engineering, and digital technologies. Past public artworks at the school include bronze inlaid terrazzo pieces by Sheila Wyne (1994) and David Griggs (1998), both featuring science themes.
Artwork must be durable with minimal maintenance requirements and designed to last the life of the building. This is an earthquake area and must meet IBC 2009 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage. The total budget of $41,500 includes all design, fabrication, installation, documentation, and plaque costs. Artists must submit six digital images of past work, a 1-2 page resume, an artist statement explaining interest in the project, and answers to required questions about location, medium, and commission level. National eligibility with Alaska preference. Contact: Curator of Public Art, (907) 343-6473.
