About This Call
The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs requests submissions from artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install a public artwork in the median at the intersection of Canada Drive and Coronet Boulevard in Dallas, Texas 75212. The project will celebrate and pay tribute to the service of veterans, especially those who reside in West Dallas. The project is a citizen-initiated proposal led by residents, veterans, and veterans advocates from West Dallas neighborhoods with the support of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program.
The installation site is located in the La Bajada neighborhood, bounded by Canada Drive to the north and east, Sylvan Avenue on the west, and Singleton Boulevard to the south. The median is approximately 400 feet long by 130 feet wide with two trees on the site and no height restrictions. Veterans regularly meet at the Bataan Community Center at 3232 Bataan Street, less than 500 feet from the installation site.
The Artist Selection Panel will review qualified submissions in June/July 2017. Short-listed artists or artist teams will be contracted to develop a site-specific concept design and will receive a $3,000 stipend to cover all costs of site visits, site research, concept production, and presentation to the selection panel. Artwork must be visible in the landscape, celebrate the contributions of veterans from all branches of service, include references to the West Dallas neighborhood, require little maintenance for an expected 20-year lifespan, and be free of safety hazards. Project budget: $75,000. Submission deadline: June 26, 2017. All professional artists are eligible except those currently under contract with the City of Dallas Public Art Program, consultants under contract for any phase of this project, City of Dallas employees and their spouses, members of the Public Art Committee, and undergraduate students.
