About This Call
Weir Farm National Historical Park's Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program is a National Park Service residency that fosters contemporary artistic expression and experimental approaches to visual art practice. The program hosts 6 established or emerging visual artists per year for one-month residencies (May-October). Housing and studio space are provided, along with a $400 stipend. Following their residencies, artists have the option to participate in the Artist-in-Residence Alumni Program managed by the Weir Farm Art Alliance.
Visual artists in all media and diverse artistic points of view are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be age 25 or older and able to speak and read English at a conversational level. Artists may only apply as individuals. A three-member jury of art professionals reviews applications based on artistic merit, project feasibility, diversity of medium, thoughtful engagement with Weir Farm's significance, and potential to foster experimentation and innovation. Selection criteria emphasize well-written work plans, artist statements, recent work samples, evidence of research about Weir Farm and American art history, and realistic proposals that can be executed within the residency timeframe.
Artists must commit to the full 4-week residency and are required to attend a Welcome event, provide one public Open Studio program, sign up with the NPS VIP Program as volunteers, and send weekly social media images and post-residency work documentation. Prohibited activities include outdoor installations affecting the historic landscape, use of toxic chemicals or hazardous materials, open flames, welding, grinding, acid etching, collection of natural materials from federal land, selling artwork on-site, overnight guests, pets, and smoking. No kiln or firing is permitted. Entry fee is $35. Application deadline: January 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applicants will be notified of decisions by mid-March.
