About This Call
We Are SNAG Membership Series of Online Exhibitions presents Appropriated Adornment. This juried exhibition invites all SNAG members to explore how history has inspired artists for thousands of years. Rather than simply borrowing imagery from the past, this exhibition asks artists to engage deeply with historical appropriation.
Submissions should include an image documenting the historical elements, materials, or sources being borrowed from and a brief statement (1-3 sentences) describing motivation for using them in a contemporary context. Works must be made within the last five years. Preference will be given to jewelry and other types of adornment, with photos of work on the body highly encouraged. The exhibition is juried by Michael Dale Bernard (UW-Milwaukee) and Emily Stoehrer (MFA Boston).
Eligibility: Open to all SNAG members 18 years or older. Applicants need not reside in the United States. All work must be original and produced within the last five years (2011 or later). Objects made from commercial kits or commercially available plans are not eligible. Collaborations are allowed if all artists involved are current SNAG members, but artists may only participate in one application (either as part of a collaboration or individually, not both). There are no size restrictions. Entry fee is $25 (non-refundable). Applications accepted beginning August 1, 2017 and must be received by midnight Mountain Time on October 1, 2017. Notification of results by November 1, 2017. Online exhibition goes live December 1, 2017 on SNAG//SPACE website. Submit up to 3 separate pieces with general shots and details. All works must include title, material, dimensions, and year of completion. Artist statement up to 3000 characters and bio up to 250 words required. Video submissions may be sent to [email protected] via CallForEntry.org, Dropbox, Google Drive, or YouTube.
