About This Call
The City of Lancaster seeks to engage an artist whose practice is informed by water and ecology to create temporary public art that brings awareness to water challenges. The temporary art project will use the Clipper Stadium area as the base site, with potential for the artwork to extend beyond those geographic confines depending on the media. Work can be ephemeral and should bring awareness to the new stormwater infiltration bed in the Clipper Stadium property. A new pedestrian/bike pathway has been created connecting Harrisburg Avenue to Prince Street, with the stadium adjacent to this pathway. The artwork will attract pedestrian and bike traffic while providing an entryway to thinking about water challenges.
This project will coincide with Lancaster Water Week (June 1–9, 2019). The artwork must be installed by May 31, 2019. The lifespan of the work will be determined by the artist and the Office of Public Art. This public art commission is open to all professional artists or teams thereof. Applicants must be 18 years or older and familiar with One Water: A Blueprint for Action principles. Artists must have a developed and consistent body of work relating to environmental and sustainability challenges and be aware of current thinking in water management. The selected artist or team must visit the site, monitor and maintain the artwork during the display period, and grant the City of Lancaster a royalty-free, perpetual license to use depictions of the artwork for non-commercial purposes.
Applications must include a letter of interest, resume/CV, minimum three references, and up to 20 digital images of relevant work in JPG format via email. An annotated support materials list should include description, budget, materials, location, client or commissioning organization, and other relevant project information. Submissions will be reviewed by the City of Lancaster Public Art Manager, a member of the Public Art Advisory Board, and the Director of Stormwater Management. Three applicants will be recommended to the PAAB for final selection. Applicants will be notified of selection by February 22, 2019. Budget: $15,000.
