About This Call
Constructed Place is a juried exhibition showcasing artworks that form environments or are themselves environments, inviting viewers to interact with or be immersed in the created spaces. The exhibition accepts freestanding, wall-hung, and lightweight ceiling-hung sculpture, as well as performance works, time-based, and new-media works. Artists are encouraged to submit indoor and outdoor sculptural work exploring contemporary relationships between viewer and artwork. Site-specific or previously unrealized works that can be completed during installation are welcome; proposals for new work may be submitted in sketch format supported by examples of existing work. A first place prize sponsored by Annmarie Garden will be awarded.
The exhibition will be held at Annmarie Garden, a thirty-acre public sculpture park and arts center affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, located in Solomons, MD. Outdoor work will be installed in the sculpture park alongside 25+ works on loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Indoor work will be featured on the first floor gallery of the recently-constructed arts building, which includes a 4,200 sq. ft. lower level space with 22 ft. high ceilings, an 8x8 ft. ground level entry, movable walls, track lighting, and large windows facing the sculpture park. Wall work should be compatible with the Arakawa system. Some pedestals are available; no AV equipment will be provided.
The exhibition is open to all Washington Sculptors Group members who have paid 2010 dues. Non-members may join by paying annual dues of $45 ($15 for full-time students). Artists may enter up to two works with up to four digital images total. Entry fee is $45. Entries must be submitted via CaFÉ by February 15, 2010. Accepted artists will be notified by February 22, 2010. Delivery of work is March 7-8, 2010 (10 am-5 pm). The opening reception is March 20, 2010 (5-7 pm). The exhibition closes May 8, 2010 at 6 pm. Pick-up of work is May 9-10, 2010 (10 am-5 pm). Artists are responsible for delivery, installation, and de-installation of their work. Annmarie Garden will insure work on site; artists are responsible for insurance during transportation. The gallery charges a 30% commission on all sales.
