About This Call

The University of Arizona seeks an experienced artist to create a public artwork for the Warren Avenue Mall Project at the Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson. The work must be of the highest artistic and conceptual quality, as the location is a major focal point of campus.

The project is located at the north terminus of the Warren Avenue Corridor at the Arizona Health Sciences Center Library, a prominent open space node that will connect to the Highland Garage and underpass via a future southwest diagonal pedestrian path. The site presents significant challenges including numerous underground utilities, visibility from Speedway Boulevard with a 6-foot elevation rise, high heat index, and highly reflective surfaces. The artwork should be identifiable as a work of art and worthy of long-term care and preservation. Possibilities include sculpture, earthworks, environmental installations, and other works. The solution may or may not incorporate a functional element beyond the artistic concept.

The budget for the public art portion is $275,000 maximum, covering all costs including design, production, transport, installation, base or foundation, permits, taxes, and insurance. A selection panel will select up to three artists to prepare complete proposals. Each finalist will receive an honorarium of $2,500 to prepare and present a final proposal. All applicants will be notified of the Committee's decision, which is final. Application deadline: March 30, 2007. Submit eight digital images of completed public works, a statement not exceeding two pages of interest and qualifications, a resume not exceeding two pages, and an annotated image list with title, year, medium, dimensions, and brief description for each image. Contact Blake Shell, Public Art Coordinator, at [email protected].
