Wall Artwork(s) Historic Downtown Liberty, MO

The City of Liberty is issuing a call for artists to create artwork for a temporary wooden façade at the corner of Water and Kansas Streets in Historic Downtown Liberty. The wall will consist of 15 individual panels (approximately 6 ft tall by 12 ft wide) that will serve as a visual barrier for a vacant lot at the SE Corner of the Historic Courthouse Square. The city seeks a mural appealing to area residents and visitors with preferred themes celebrating community and/or culture, city pride, history, and inclusivity. The artwork should capture the essence of community pride and draw people from the Kansas City Metro area and visitors to Liberty.

Artists who draw, paint, make prints, work in computer or graphic design, photography, or other media are invited to apply. Applicants must be 18 or older and willing to sign a legal agreement and waiver. Once installed, artwork must require limited maintenance and withstand the area's climate and weather for up to two years. The wall is built from unpainted or primed CCA treated plywood. Canvas artwork will be directly fixed to the wall via staples, or artists may paint directly on the wood.

Artists may select one of three proposal options: (A) create artwork for one individual panel, (B) create artwork for all panels on either N. Water or E. Kansas Street, or (C) create artwork for all panels on both streets. Submissions should include a resume (maximum 2 pages), outline of chosen option, 3-6 examples of previous work, detailed project description, 1-5 sketches or digital illustrations, and proposed budget for materials. There is no application fee. Honorariums are: Option A up to $150 per panel, Option B up to $1,750, and Option C up to $3,500. The Liberty Arts Commission will provide canvas and hardware if chosen; the artist is responsible for remaining materials. All artwork becomes the property of the City of Liberty upon installation. Applications are due February 26, 2018, with artist notification by March 20, 2018, and artwork completion targeted for April 27, 2018.
