About This Call
San Jose Public Art, engaged by VTA/BART (Valley Transportation Authority/Bay Area Rapid Transit), is seeking an artist or artist-led team to design, fabricate, deliver, and oversee installation of a signature artwork for the new Berryessa BART Station in east San Jose. The Berryessa BART Station is one of two stations that are part of the 10-mile Berryessa Extension, the first phase of the 16-mile BART Silicon Valley extension. The station is located between Berryessa and Mabury Roads, adjacent to the San Jose Flea Market, where the Penitencia and Coyote Creeks meet. The area has a rich history of Native American cultures, specifically the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. During excavations for the Silicon Valley BART Extension, the Penitencia Creek Site was discovered, approximately 500 years old and occupied for about 50 years, with evidence including hearths, cooking features, caches of items, tools and human burials.
The total art project budget is $380,000, consisting of a $60,000 artist design fee and $320,000 for fabrication, delivery, and installation oversight. The artist design fee includes all expenses related to research, design, and engineering of the artwork, including design time and expenses, transportation and accommodations, consultants, engineering, stamped construction documentation, permits, and insurance. The fabrication budget includes all expenses related to fabrication, delivery to site, and installation oversight, including any required licenses or bonding, transportation and installation of materials, and all other project-related expenses including sales tax. A 10% contingency on the construction budget is designated for unforeseen conditions, with any remaining contingency retained by the artist.
This opportunity is open to artists working or living in the United States who can demonstrate experience developing and implementing projects into architectural environments with a budget greater than $150,000. Applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal. Selected finalists will be asked to travel to San Jose for interviews the week of February 3 or 10, 2014. Selection criteria include aesthetic excellence of past projects, experience creating public artworks in collaboration with stakeholder groups, experience developing artworks in outdoor environments, experience collaborating with design and construction professionals, and successful development of a permanent artwork in a public setting valued at greater than $150,000. Work samples should include 4-8 images. Submissions must be received through CaFÉ no later than 10:00 p.m. PST on January 23, 2014. There is no application fee.
