About This Call

Vision: Shadow and Light is a photography exhibition with the theme of shadow and light. Photography is the recording of patterns of darkness and light. Shadows enhance the relationships of subjects in an image, they give definition and dimension, which compliments the quality of the light values. Photographers have used dramatic shadows and patterns in black and white images and have also explored using ethereal and moody shadows and textures in color photography. The exhibition will feature a range of how shadow and light are interpreted by contemporary photographers.

Juror Todd Johnson is the founder and director of Black Box Gallery and holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been a photography portfolio reviewer for Photolucida (PDX OR), Critical Mass (PDX OR), Dodho Magazine (Barcelona, Spain) and Blue Sky Gallery (PDX OR). Johnson has worked as an independent curator for exhibitions at multiple venues including Linfield College, Gallery Homeland, The Waiting Room Gallery, and others, and has worked in arts education and arts administration for 20 years.

Entry deadline is February 11, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Entry fee is $35.00. Applicants may submit 1-5 images. Exhibition dates are March 1-20, 2021. Black Box Gallery will be open by appointment only during March due to COVID-19. Each exhibition will have 24 photographs selected by the juror for exhibition at the gallery. An additional 30 photographs will be selected for exhibition in the online gallery annex. All 54 photographs from the show will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books.

Black Box Gallery will provide free printing, matting, and framing for all selected exhibitions. The gallery has 18" x 24" black frames and white mats pre-cut for 12" x 18", 12" x 12" and 12" x 16" prints. Prints are made on an Epson Stylus Pro archival ink jet printer on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper in a color-calibrated environment. Selected photographers must provide a high resolution Tiff or JPEG file for printing. All exhibition prints will be kept in a flat file after the show for future sale and promotion. Black Box Gallery will shred all gallery prints after 5 years of exhibition in the flat files.

For accepted photographers, Black Box will only print one exhibition print. If there is a sale inquiry, the photographer will be notified before a sale is confirmed. All rights remain with the photographer. Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, with 50% going to the photographer. If the artist prefers, the print does not have to be for sale and will be for exhibition and promotion only. The call is open to international photographers.
