About This Call

The Village of Palmetto Bay is seeking an artist or team of artists to create a public art piece for the Coral Reef Old Cutler Traffic Circle at the intersection of SW 152 Street and Old Cutler Road. This intersection serves as a centerpiece for the Village, surrounded by stable residential areas and connecting northern and eastern Miami-Dade County to south Miami-Dade. The location unites some of the Village's most prized possessions: Biscayne Bay, antique Old Cutler Road with its bike path and rich history, native plants such as mangroves, endangered species like the Pine Rockland, and local wildlife including fish, birds, and reptiles.

The Village desires art that signifies their commitment to the environment, particularly due to proximity to Biscayne Bay. The artwork should foster a sense of place within the community, enhance the aesthetics of the traffic circle, and reflect the theme of environmental stewardship while utilizing sustainable materials whenever practical. The artwork proposal should be free of any water accessory features, appropriate for public space, and provide a focal point for this significant intersection. The selected artist should have a unique vision for sustainability, resiliency, and conservation, create a piece that speaks to the community and provides Palmetto Bay's identity, include adequate lighting for drivers and pedestrians, and have a demonstrated track record of working on-time and within budget.

The project budget is $185,000 with contract approval expected in Spring 2026 and installation in Summer-Fall 2026. Applications require a brief artist statement (maximum 1 page), professional CV/resume (maximum 2 pages), and 6-10 digital images of completed artworks with detailed information including title, medium, dimensions, date, current location, and explanatory text. This national search is open to all artists, both emerging and established, individuals and teams working with various mediums, with particular encouragement for local artists, women, minorities, and veterans to apply.
