About This Call

The City of Sunrise is seeking artists to create murals for the new Village Art Plaza, located on Sunset Strip in eastern Sunrise. The project includes three walls with the following dimensions: Mural 1 (1,111 sq. ft.) on the Village Civic Center Building East Elevation, visible from the plaza entrance; Mural 2 (889 sq. ft., with optional additional 226 sq. ft.) on the Village Multipurpose Building North Elevation serving as a stage backdrop; and Mural 3 (1,779 sq. ft., with optional additional 290 sq. ft.) on the Village Multipurpose Building West Elevation at the plaza entrance.

Design themes are open to the artist's vision but should be inspired by art and family-friendly for public viewing. Designs must represent the City's identity as a warm, inviting, and culturally diverse community. Designs cannot include political or religious content, controversial material, intellectual property violations, trademarks, illegal activity imagery, advertisements, logos, signage, or business promotion. Designs must be unique to the City and not previously used elsewhere. Local South Florida artists are preferred but not required. The budget is $15 to $25 per square foot plus a stipend for shortlisted artists, covering all costs including research, design, materials, equipment, permitting, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, and labor.

The selection process occurs in two phases. Phase one shortlists up to nine artists or artist teams based on experience, credentials, style, previous work, and artist statement. Phase two provides each shortlisted artist or team with an $800 stipend to develop detailed proposals with conceptual design options. The final selection will be made by the Selection Committee and submitted to the City Commission. The selected artist or team will enter into an agreement with the City and be responsible for creation and installation of the final work. Submissions must include 3-15 images and 0-5 videos. Entry deadline is April 14, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
