About This Call

The City of Sunrise, Florida is seeking to commission an Artist or Artist team to create two vibrant entryway sculptures for the entrance to the City's Village Art Plaza, located at 2260 NW 68 Avenue, Sunrise. The sculptures should be vibrant, colorful, reflect the spirit of the City of Sunrise and invite and welcome people into the Village Art Plaza. The sculptures must be impactful to pedestrians and passerby traffic both day and night.

The Call to Artists will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, up to three Artists or Artist teams will be shortlisted by the Selection Committee based on experience, credentials, style, and previous work. In the second phase, each shortlisted Artist or Artist team will receive up to $1,500.00 stipend for the development of a detailed proposal with conceptual design options for both entryway sculptures. The selected Artist or Artist team will enter into an agreement with the City for both entryway sculptures in an amount not to exceed $75,000.00 (plus stipend for shortlisted artists). The budget includes all costs: research, community and agency meeting cost, design, materials, permitting of the sculptures, fabrication, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, lighting design for the sculptures, labor, structural engineering, and transportation. The selected Artist or Artist team will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. Two 5-foot x 5-foot concrete art pads with electricity for the entryway sculptures will be provided by the City.

Each sculpture must be between 7 to 10 feet tall, vibrant and timeless, capable of making a dramatic statement. Both sculptures must be complementary to each other and create a sense of arrival into the Village Art Plaza. The sculptures should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance, designed and constructed in accordance with the Florida Building Code. Each sculpture must incorporate the name of the Plaza, "Village Art Plaza." The sculptures should be somewhat narrow but not fragile. The City prefers sculptures with uniqueness, vibrant colors, visibility day and night (can be lit from within), no water features, not interactive, and incorporating the name "Village Art Plaza." The application is open to all Professional Artists nationwide with experience working with public agencies and professional engineers. Submit 3-10 images of work samples via CAFÉ at www.callforentry.org.
