About This Call

Villa Barr is located on four acres of landscaped grounds in the countryside outside of Detroit, Michigan. This property was sculptor David Barr's dream house and studio. The home consists of a ground level with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and a skylit, lofted upper level of open-concept living space with an office, kitchen, and large living/dining area with a grand piano. Visiting artists have access to a private studio equipped with wood and metal working tools, as well as the architect-designed home.

Three residency sections are offered each year: Spring (March-May 2026), Summer (June-August 2026), and Fall (September-November 2026). Two artists are accepted each section—one Visiting Artist who resides in the home and one Local Artist who has access to the studio. Each artist receives a private studio space and access to the main shared studio. Residents are each awarded a $500 materials stipend. Visiting artists are additionally awarded a $500 travel stipend. Artists may propose to spend less time than the full residency period, but not more.

Applicants must be 18 years of age and are eligible internationally. The application requires a portfolio of up to 10 works, a brief artist bio, an artist statement, and a project proposal. Project proposals should state a clear vision for public engagement, which could include hands-on workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, or installation-based projects suitable for display in the public park. Strong proposals engage thoughtfully with Villa Barr Art Park's grounds, gardens, history, or studio. Entry fee is $20.00. Applicants may submit up to 3 applications and may submit up to 10 images, 6 audio files, and 3 video files (minimum 6 total samples required).
