About This Call

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art Program seeks artist(s) or artist team(s) to design artwork for the Vermont Corridor Building, a new facility for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. The Vermont Corridor is a major project spanning 5 County-owned properties in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles, located at 3175 West 6th Street and at 433, 510, 526, 532 and 550 South Vermont Avenue. The project is anticipated to have a two-year design and construction schedule.

Two distinct opportunities are available: Opportunity 1 ($700,000 budget) involves creating artwork for the main terrace and lobby area with surrounding meeting rooms, which could include sculptural, sound, or light installations for exterior and interior spaces. Opportunity 2 ($150,000 budget) focuses on the client intake level, intended to serve the homeless population by offering daytime shelter, showers, and access to resources. All materials must be durable and resilient. The total project budget is $850,000, with each budget including all costs associated with design, fabrication, delivery, and installation. The artist fee includes design, fabrication supervision, installation verification, artist travel, administration, and liability insurance.

Eligibility is open to all professional artists residing or working in the United States. Artists who have artwork in the Los Angeles County Civic Art Collection are not eligible unless this project has a higher budget than their previously commissioned project. Applicants must submit 5-10 images or video clips of their work, a résumé (maximum 3 pages), three professional references, and written responses addressing project interest, audience engagement, artistic practice, and budget management experience. The application deadline is Monday, June 4, 2018 at 5:00 PM PST. An optional Technical Assistance Workshop is scheduled for Monday, May 7, 2018 at 6:30 PM at the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, 1055 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 800, Los Angeles, CA 90017.
