About This Call

Experienced artists are invited to submit qualifications for artwork opportunities to create a signature identity for the exterior of Valley Medical Center's new Women and Children Center as part of the Imagine VMC initiative. This multi-phased project, led by the County of Santa Clara, Silicon Valley Creates, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, will infuse the arts into a 300,000-square-foot hospital wing being converted to San Jose's first Women and Children's Center.

Public art opportunities include façade-mounted or stand-alone sculptures visible from the street, with sites including: 5th Floor Façades (two eastern facades approximately 25'X 47' each), a five-story glass-enclosed stairwell, a 3rd Floor roof garden, and exterior balconies. A wide range of approaches, materials, and treatments are acceptable, provided the work is appropriate for exterior installation and complies with all applicable building, fire, and safety codes.

The selection process is two-phase: artists will submit qualifications, work samples, and statement of interest to be considered for a short list of three to five finalists; finalists will then participate in interviews in San Jose focusing on conceptual approach and site-specific criteria. The total art project budget is $1,000,000, with a minimum commission award of $250,000. Artist Design Fees will be 10% of the commission amount; Fabrication, Delivery, and Installation Oversight will be 90%. This opportunity is open to artists working or living in the United States who have experience developing and implementing projects into architectural environments with budgets greater than $250,000. Applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at time of submittal. Submissions require 8 images and must be made through CaFÉ. Last date to submit questions is August 12, 2016.
