About This Call

Utah Arts & Museums Public Art Program and Utah State University seek artists and artist teams to create site-specific artwork for the new Utah State University Life Sciences facility in Logan, Utah. The deadline for submission is July 21, 2017.

The new Life Sciences Building will serve as the center for student achievement in the life sciences. The facility includes 13 teaching laboratories, five lecture halls and classrooms, four research laboratory suites, and collaboration and student study spaces. The building's design is informed by biological systems, with mechanical and electrical systems centrally located and distributed to extremities. The structure features a five-story laboratory tower to the north, a three-story classroom and office volume to the south, and a central glazed beacon containing social and public spaces. The west facade is configured as a stone canyon wall in GFRC (glass-fiber-reinforced concrete) with horizontal striations resembling sandstone layers.

Potential sites for artistic contribution include the exterior northwest plaza, the 30-foot vertical interior atrium space and 10' x 20' x 60' stairwell, glass banisters at the second floor atrium opening, north-facing atrium wall surfaces, and plenum spaces between floors facing the atrium. The Committee is open to other areas suggested by artists. A budget of $313,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation. The Committee may commission more than one artist.

Eligibility is open to resident US citizens or legal resident artists and artist teams. Utah artists are strongly encouraged to apply. Submissions may be made online via www.callforentry.org or by USB flash drive or CD/DVD. Required materials include a letter of interest (maximum two pages), up to six images of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum, 72 dpi, under 2MB), a PDF document identifying each image with title, year, medium, and dimensions, and a professional resume in PDF format. Movie files of no more than three minutes may be submitted if work cannot be documented well with still images.
