About This Call

The Utah School for the Deaf and Blind is seeking public art commissions for a new 31,500 square foot facility in Springville near 900 S and 1200 W. The facility will serve students with hearing and vision loss from birth through age 22, including preschool, elementary, and junior high school programs, as well as school performances and life skills programs.

The building features a multipurpose room/mini gymnasium, indoor clubhouses with physical therapy training, conference rooms, libraries, therapy rooms, sensory/light rooms, early childhood classrooms customized for sensory disabilities, enclosed courtyards with play areas and sensory gardens, video conferencing rooms, an audiology suite, and two potential sensory nooks in the north and south lobbies. The architect has identified potential sites for public art commissions that provide sensory, tactile, interactive, kinetic, or play experiences for students. The selection committee is open to considering other sites and media as envisioned by artists.

A budget of $71,400 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation. American or legal resident artists and artist teams are encouraged to apply, with particular encouragement for deaf and/or blind artists. Applicants must submit up to six images of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum, 72 dpi, under 2MB), a letter of interest of no more than two pages describing their interest in the project and how their work relates to it, and a professional resume. Movie files of no more than 3 minutes may be submitted as documentation if still images cannot adequately represent the work. Applications must be received by June 8, 2018 by 5 p.m. (not a postmark deadline) either online at www.callforentry.org or via thumb drive.
