About This Call

The Utah Public Art Program of the Division of Arts and Museums, in association with the Division of Facilities and Construction Management and the University of Utah, is seeking artists to create site-specific art installations for the new Applied Sciences Facility in Salt Lake City. The facility is a 40,700 square-foot renovation of the historic William Stewart Building and a 100,000 square-foot addition that will house the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. Artists from Utah are encouraged to submit, and the project is open to any resident US artist.

The facility will focus on aerospace, semiconductor technology, biotechnology, data science, hazardous weather forecasting, and air quality. The Stewart Building and its additions are within the "Science Yard," a pedestrian corridor intended to serve as a core gathering space for outdoor classes, informal gatherings, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Selection Committee has identified potential artwork sites including the atrium/lobby and exterior entrances of the new build, the exterior plaza between Crocker Science Center and the new build, and the 2nd floor stairway in Stewart Building. Artists may also suggest additional sites.

The committee encourages artists to consider five principles: Interactive (enabling auditory, visual, and kinesthetic activities), Community (emphasizing collaborative design), Visible (encouraging curiosity and discovery through technology and storytelling), Responsible (addressing diverse needs and sustainability), and Human (designing for people to raise standards of learning and research). The incorporated artwork should reflect the environmental focus and collaborative element of both departments. A budget of $165,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, engineering, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation. Applicants must submit 2-10 images and up to 1 video.
