About This Call

Letters of interest and qualifications are requested from artists interested in creating art for the public area(s) of the new Department of Environmental Quality Technical Support Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The new Support Center, located in Salt Lake City and bordered on the east and north sides by residential neighborhoods, is a 21,600 square foot facility designed to support the work of Utah's Environmental Quality Department. The building's design and materials draw inspiration from the scientific nature of the work produced in the facility, with influences including how air and water affect the earth. The architect utilizes natural light to enhance view corridors, particularly in the lobby area. The exterior surfaces are designed for durability, respect for adjacent buildings, and to create an inviting structure for staff, visitors and the public.

The Selection Committee will collaborate with an artist to develop an installation that reflects the important role the Department of Environmental Quality has in safeguarding Utah's air, land and water. Potential sites for public artwork include the southwest exterior plaza (the main entry and public face of the facility), the open colonnade on the partial west side of the plaza, the west facing curtain wall of glass, and the west facing interior wall visible from the exterior of the building. $40,500 has been allocated by the Utah State Legislature to commission public art work(s) for this facility, covering all costs associated with the artist's public art commission(s) including travel, installation and related expenses. Finalists will be offered an honorarium to assist with costs associated with time and travel for a full proposal presentation and interview with the selection committee, which will become part of the total commission award for the selected artist(s).

Resident American or legal resident artists and artist teams are eligible for this commission. Utah artists are encouraged to apply. Art selection committee members, Utah Arts & Museums staff and employees, subcontractors or consultants of Method Studio or the General Construction Contractor are not eligible. Applications must include a letter of interest (not more than three typewritten pages), a pdf document identifying each image with title, year, medium, and dimensions, a professional resume, and up to six images maximum of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum on the longest side, 72 dpi, under 2MB file size). Alternatively, a movie file not exceeding three minutes in length may be submitted for work that cannot be documented well with still images. Complete application packages must be received by June 30, 2017 by 5 p.m. MDT. Applications may be submitted online at www.callforentry.org or via hardcopy (USB flash/thumb drive, CD, or DVD) mailed to: Utah Public Art Program, Attn: Mackenzie Morton / DEQ, 300 S Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. For questions, contact Mackenzie Morton at 801-245-7270 or [email protected], or Jim Glenn at 801-245-7271 or [email protected].
