About This Call
Call for interested artists or artist teams to create site-specific artwork or propose appropriate existing artwork for the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control facility in West Valley City, Utah. The facility is located at 5600 West 6200 South.
The Art Committee intends to commission or purchase art that may draw inspiration from the community of West Valley City, the services offered by DABC, the architecture, the diverse cultures of West Valley City, the history, or the Utah landscape. The architect has included organic materials like copper in the design and acknowledges the proximity of the Bingham Canyon Mine. The plaza/planter area directly outside the main entrance has been identified as a potential site for the commission. The Committee asks that any work placed in the planter area consider sight lines and light from the interior out. Artist-suggested exterior sites are welcome if appropriate for the work, architecture, and egress. Proposed existing work must include full costs for presentation, shipping, engineering, assembly, installation, and any necessary structural alterations.
Up to $17,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, framing, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, and documentation. This project is open to resident American and legal resident artists/artist teams residing in the Western United States (Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Wyoming). Art selection committee members and immediate families, board members, and employees of Frank Murdock Architects or Utah Division of Arts and Museums are not eligible. Submissions must include a letter of interest (maximum two pages), up to six images of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum on longest side, 72 dpi, under 2MB), a PDF document identifying each image with title, year, medium, dimensions, and artist name, and a professional resume in PDF format. Movie files (maximum 3 minutes) may be submitted on DVD if work cannot be documented well with still images. Deadline for materials: April 7, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Committee reviews applications April 20, 2017. Finalist presentations June 15, 2017. Applications may be submitted online at www.callforentry.org or by CD/DVD mail to: Jim Glenn, Attention: DABC, Utah Public Art Program, 300 S. Rio Grande, Salt Lake City, UT 84101.
