About This Call
The City of Asheville is requesting qualifications from artists capable of designing and installing a permanent, interpretive stand to display existing bronze bonnet and apple basket sculptures for Urban Trail Station 15 "Marketplace." The stand will replace a bench and be installed directly within the brick pavers of the sidewalk at the corner of Walnut Street and N. Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville.
The stand should be 30–36 inches tall and must keep with the stylistic integrity of "The Frontier Period" (1784–1880) of the Asheville Urban Trail. A variety of sculptural mediums may be used as long as the stand secures the existing sculptures, is durable enough to withstand outdoor elements, meets all safety and code requirements, and does not impede the minimum Americans with Disabilities Act requirement of 42 inches of accessible sidewalk. If an artist hires a contractor for installation, the artist is responsible for all associated costs and must provide a certificate of general liability insurance.
This is a regional call for qualified local artists currently residing in North Carolina in Buncombe, Yancey, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Madison, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Graham, Clay, or Cherokee counties (proof of residency required). Submitted materials will be reviewed by City of Asheville staff. Three finalists will be selected and required to conduct a site visit and enter into a contract with the city. Finalists will be paid $500 each for preliminary designs and will retain copyright over their original designs; the City of Asheville retains rights to promote and reproduce the completed work in print and electronic form on a non-commercial basis. The final artist's budget is $15,000 on a turnkey basis, including all costs for materials, fabrication, installation, and artist commission.
