About This Call
UPLIFT: CELEBRATING THE SIERRA NEVADA is an exhibition showcasing visual imagery, science, and cultural elements of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The exhibition will examine the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future of this range that defines California's landscape, watershed, and significantly contributes to the state's appearance, climate, land use, economy, and culture.
Artists are invited to submit original paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, hand-pulled prints, digital art, textile art, fiber art, book and map art, sound art, music, installation, and video. Artistic topics may include physical features such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Mammoth, Mono Lake, and Devils Postpile; relationship concepts such as its interface with Death Valley, the Gold Rush, or John Muir; or may explore the Sierra Nevada's social issues, climate and orography, recreation, land management, economies, natural history, political issues, conservation, archeology, and geophysical sciences. The juror is Jeanne Lorenz, an MFA graduate from Yale University and current professor at Solano College.
Entry deadline is August 18, 2019 at 10:59 PM PDT. The application fee is $40 ($30 for Arts Benicia members) and covers up to 3 artworks. Artists may submit 1 to 6 still images to represent their submissions, with each image file between 1 MB and 5 MB. Sonic or video artists must submit a still image of their setup in addition to their media file. Ceiling-hung works, 3-dimensional work that cannot be on a pedestal, video works, and sonic art require contact with staff before applying at [email protected]. Exhibition dates are October 12 through November 3. Online judging occurs August 20-26, with artists notified by August 28. Hand-delivered artwork is received October 2-3, and shipped artwork is received September 28 through October 3. The public reception is Saturday, October 12, 6-8 PM. Artwork pickup is November 6, 3-7 PM. Artists receive 60% of sales; Arts Benicia receives 40%.
