About This Call

Unyielding Sonder is an exhibition celebrating the diverse artistic interpretations of Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander artists in the United States. The exhibition showcases the complex experiences and distinctive perspectives of these artists as they navigate multicultural worlds and grapple with their split identities. Through their art and personal narratives, the exhibition brings to light the challenges and triumphs of these individuals, promoting greater understanding and appreciation for their unique perspectives.

Artists may submit up to three original works of art that have not been exhibited before in North Carolina. Acceptable media include 2D, 3D, video, and installation pieces up to 10 feet in size, including mixed media, painting, sculpture, photography, print media, collage, fiber art, video, and installations. Hanging works should be appropriately framed with a wire hanger or otherwise prepared for hanging using the Walker Hanging System. 3D works will be displayed on pedestals. Film and video works must be shipped with media player ready to be played on the screen. Installation pieces must include a clear installation manual with step-by-step images. High-quality photos and documentation are recommended.

Eligibility is open to Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander artists residing in the U.S. who are 20 years or older. The entry fee is $30 for up to three submissions; fee waivers are available upon request. Jurors are Eric Sung (Associate Professor of Art, Photography at Providence College) and Sangmi Yoo (Associate Professor of Art, Printmaking at Texas Tech University). Awards include Best in Show ($1,000) and four Honorable Mentions ($100 each). The submission deadline is March 6, 2024. Acceptance notifications will be sent March 12, 2024. Work delivery is March 23-April 6, 2024, with a receipt deadline of April 6. The exhibition opens April 12, 2024 (private reception 5:00pm-6:00pm, public reception 6:00pm-8:00pm) and closes May 18, 2024. Hand-delivered works must be picked up May 18-22, 2024.
