Unusual Views

Descanso Gardens invites artists to submit work for the "Unusual Views" juried exhibition at the Sturt Haaga Gallery. This open call seeks artists 18 years and older to present innovative interpretations of gardens, with priority given to work specifically referencing Descanso Gardens. The competition encourages risk-taking, unconventional perspectives, and creative use of media. Any genre and style is admissible, but the key to selection will be unique interpretation rather than simple representation of the garden.

Eligibility: All work must be original in concept and completed within the last 2 years. Artists must submit a brief statement discussing how their work relates to the theme. Entry fee is $50 (non-refundable) for up to three artworks, with a 50 percent discount available for Descanso Gardens members. Work sample requirements: 1-3 images and 0-2 videos (maximum 3 total samples). Only works not previously exhibited in the Sturt Haaga Gallery are eligible.

Awards: Best in Show $500, 2nd Place $300, 3rd Place $150, People's Choice $300. Entrants are eligible for one award only. Exhibition specifications: Limit 3 original artworks in all media. 2D works must be framed and no larger than 24" x 36" x 6" (depth). 3D work limited to 24" x 24" x 12" (height). No artworks installed from ceiling. Works requiring electricity will not be accepted. All artwork must remain on display for the duration of the exhibition (January 20 – June 18, 2019). Artists are responsible for transportation to and from the Gallery. All artwork must have a sale price or be marked NSF (not for sale) with an insurance value. The Gallery will insure loaned objects for the stated value while on Descanso Gardens' property; artist is responsible for insurance during transit. Gallery hours: Daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gallery admission is free with Gardens admission.
