About This Call
The University of Utah in partnership with the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management and the Utah Division of Arts & Museum Public Art Program is requesting artist or artist team qualifications for the creation of site-specific artwork(s) for the University of Utah Crocker Science Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The deadline for materials is June 29, 2016.
The Crocker Science Center will be an adaptation and expansion of the George Thomas Building into a teaching and research facility. The primary mission is to produce the next generation of interdisciplinary scholars, teachers, and scientists. The building will house the Center for Cell and Genome Science, the Center for Statistical Science, the Center for Quantitative Biology, and the Center for Science and Mathematics Education, along with state-of-the-art classrooms, teaching laboratories, student support services, and a technology incubator. The vision is to provide innovative, interdisciplinary opportunities in science and mathematics through the integration of teaching, learning, and research, with artwork incorporated as part of an intentional experiential environment.
The Selection Committee asks commissioned artist(s) to consider cross-disciplinary concepts including patterns, cause and effect, scale and proportion, systems and system models, energy and matter, structure and function, and stability and change. The Committee is interested in work rooted in concrete scientific principles that engages visitors and students to think like scientists and act like researchers. Art interventions should inspire people with a sense of purpose, involve them in the science enterprise, and challenge their understanding of the natural world. Work samples should include 1-6 images. Contact: [email protected]
