About This Call
LexArts Inc. in association with University of Kentucky Healthcare seeks artists to create a public mural on the walls of an exterior courtyard at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, KY. The organization is commissioning proposals by three experienced public artists for the site with the expectation of realizing one proposal in Fall 2023. There is no application fee to enter.
The selected site consists of three spaces sized approximately 26'x 26', 4'x 26', and 13'x 26', with a total area of approximately 782 square feet. The project budget is $20,000, all inclusive to complete the mural including artist's fee, travel, research, execution, insurance, taxes, site preparation, equipment rental, and materials. Artists must be able to legally work in the United States, be at least 18 years of age, and have successfully completed large outdoor murals over 200 square feet in the past.
The selection committee will identify three finalists who will be paid $500 upon delivery of a complete site-specific proposal including composition, concept statement, and process outlining budget and timeline for completion. Finalists are encouraged but not required to visit the site. Critical selection factors include artistic distinction, experience creating high-quality large-scale murals, low maintenance and durability, and contextual integration with sensitivity to adolescent and younger patients experiencing mental and behavioral health treatment. Applicants should submit up to 6 digital images of past murals with descriptions of size, budget, year completed, and location; a current resume (required); and an optional one-page artist statement describing public art experience and interest in the project. Contact Nathan Zamarron at 859-255-2951 or [email protected] for more information.
