About This Call
The University of Florida's Art in State Buildings Program is seeking artists for a site-specific mural commission at the Institute of Hispanic Latino Cultures ("La Casita"). The project has a $20,000 art budget. Up to 3 finalists (artist or artist team) will receive an honorarium in an amount to be determined, to visit the site virtually, and create and present a site-specific proposal.
The mural site is located in the courtyard at La Casita, with walls facing south, west, and north. These walls are heavily shadowed by abstracted flag designs cast from the ceiling. The walls are made of Nichiha fiber panel with a decorative concrete masonry unit along the base. The committee is looking for art that supports the identities of the IHLC, which includes 27 countries and several languages. Student engagement is desired.
To be eligible, artists must meet at least two of the following criteria: works included in private, public, corporate or museum collections; received awards, grants or fellowships; completed other public commissions on a similar scale; or participated in exhibitions at major museums or galleries. Application materials required: a brief Letter of Interest explaining why your artwork is perfect for this project and how your submitted images address the project requirements (please indicate your affiliation with the cultures of the IHLC); a current professional resume emphasizing public art experience, public collections and public commissions; and 10-20 digital images (first five will receive initial review in a blind review process with no identifying information on images). Up to 6 video or audio files may be submitted (only artwork with sound or motion). Project timeline: Finalists notification December 2020/January 2021; Virtual Site Visit TBD; Proposals Due March 2021.
