About This Call

The Colorado Council on the Arts, Art in Public Places Program and the University of Colorado – Boulder seek to commission an artist or artist team for the new Visual Arts Complex. The Visual Arts Complex includes both art instruction and an art museum and will create a Cultural Gateway for the campus. The artwork must have a compelling relationship with both art and architecture. The artwork should be conceptually and visually innovative and original. The artwork can be located in the interior or the exterior and all media will be considered. The artwork selected must challenge the viewer to engage in conversation, communicate sophistication and should have the power to inspire.

The Visual Arts Complex is a 170,000 gross square foot building designed by award-winning architects Kallman, McKinnell and Wood from Boston and OZ Architecture from Boulder/Denver. The complex will be the premier visual arts building in the Colorado university system and an important public resource for the Denver-Boulder area and beyond. The building incorporates environmentally sustainable building strategies and will be LEED certified. The complex features two wings connected at the lower and third levels: the west wing houses the Art Department with academic studios, offices and classrooms; the east wing contains the Art Museum on the first level with climate-controlled exhibition and storage spaces, a 200 seat auditorium, collection study area, shop and public service area.

$100,000 is available for all related expenses of this Public Art commission including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and other related costs. United States citizens only. Entry deadline: May 1, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Work sample requirements: 8 images.
