About This Call
The University of Central Florida seeks qualifications from artists and artist/design collectives to design, fabricate, and install permanent site-specific public art for the new Dr. Phillips Academic Commons at the UCF Downtown campus in downtown Orlando. The public art allocation is $85,000. Public art elements must be integrated into the new Dr. Phillips Academic Commons, a 148,000 square foot building located in the Creative Village development. Installation should be completed before the target completion date of May 2019.
The Dr. Phillips Academic Commons will be a four-story building with two distinct wings connected by an iconic bridge on the third and fourth floors, framing an outdoor courtyard as the central meeting space. Public art at the UCF Downtown Campus will be iconic, innovative, inspiring, and site-specific, making a strong visible statement about UCF's role as a leader in higher education and commitment to the arts, culture, technology, and community placemaking.
Artists and design teams must demonstrate expertise and recognition in their medium and provide evidence of meeting at least two of the following criteria: relevant experience working with architects, contractors, and clients on public art value engineering; completion of public commissions on similar scope, scale, and budget; art works in noteworthy private, public, corporate, or museum collections; significant awards, grants, or fellowships; or participation in solo or acclaimed group exhibitions at major art museums or galleries. Submissions must include a letter of interest explaining how prior work qualifies for the project, a current professional resume emphasizing public art experience, and a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 20 digital images with no identifying information. Design, fabrication, and installation decisions must be coordinated with architects and construction contractors, with all infrastructure considerations included in deliverables approved during the design process.
