Underwater Sculpture Garden Round 4

The City of Pompano Beach is commissioning an artist or artist team to design and fabricate a sculpture for a work-for-hire project. The sculpture will be displayed at the beach for one year, then submerged into the ocean and attached to Lady Luck in Shipwreck Park. The selected artist will be responsible for working with South Florida Diving Headquarters to sink and attach the sculpture, and must contact Shipwreck Park and South Florida Diving Headquarters for details on connecting the artwork as part of the final approval process. The City will supply an additional $7,000.00 towards installation, documentation, and other fees associated with sinking and attaching the artwork.

The theme should focus on native marine life or other things synonymous with Florida, realistic or surreal. The artwork should be designed as a designated area for taking photos and selfies where visitors can interact and pose with it. Kinetic artwork will not be considered. Artists must consider what the artwork will look like once submerged and as it becomes an artificial reef, including how it will maintain its aesthetic as moss and other marine life accumulate. The artwork should not exceed 3 ft. x 3 ft. wide and 6 ft. tall, and must weigh a minimum of 500 pounds.

Shipwreck Park is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating an underwater park system with artificial reefs and public art to raise awareness of coral reef preservation. Lady Luck is a 324-foot tanker vessel sunk on July 23rd, 2016, located 1½ miles off Pompano Beach's shore. This sculpture will be the fourth Shipwreck Park-specific sculpture added to Lady Luck since the ship was sunk. Work samples should include 3-5 images. Budget: $35,000. Deadline: March 3, 2026.
