About This Call

The City of Pompano Beach is commissioning an artist or artist team to design and fabricate a sculpture for display at the beach for one year, after which it will be submerged into the ocean and attached to Lady Luck in Shipwreck Park. The selected artist will be responsible for sinking and attaching the sculpture. Budget is $35,000, with an additional $5,000 provided by the City toward installation and fees associated with sinking and attaching the artwork.

The sculpture theme should focus on marine life, realistic or fictional, and must consider how the artwork will appear once submerged and functioning as an artificial reef. The artwork must not exceed 3 ft. x 6 ft. in size and must weigh close to 500 pounds. Permitted materials include concrete, ferrous metals ¼ inch or more in thickness, clean steel, and limestone boulders, all free from contaminants. The sculpture must be clean and free from asphalt, petroleum, hydrocarbons, and toxic residues. The artwork construction must provide at least 3 pick points for safe lifting and lowering by lift bag. A 12" 2-1/2"d. schedule 40 S.S. pipe should be connected to the sculpture for attachment to the 3" receivers on Lady Luck, with a 3/4" through hole in the middle of the pipe for bolt attachment.

Designs must be appropriate for public display and broad-based audiences of all ages. Designs that are religious, political, or sexual in nature will not be accepted. The structure may not display messages with text, words, or alpha-numeric characters, and neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed. Artists must work with an engineer if necessary and contact Shipwreck Park for details on connecting the artwork as part of the final approval process. General Liability Insurance with minimum limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 per aggregate is required, naming the City of Pompano Beach as an additional insured.
