About This Call
The City of Golden is seeking public art designs for two locations at Ulysses Park (1205 Ulysses Street), a community recreation and athletic complex currently undergoing comprehensive renovation. The park renovation project is expected to be complete in late 2025. Consistent with the City's policy to invest 1% of major construction projects to public art, the Public Art Commission (PAC) and City Parks and Recreation Advisory Board have designated this project as warranting significant public art installation(s).
The City is seeking free-standing art (not murals) that serves as a "welcoming statement" to visitors entering the park from two distinct vehicular parking areas: the eastern entry off Ulysses Street (primary focus) and the southern entry off West 10th Avenue. Artists may submit for one or both locations. The artwork should celebrate the park and its offerings, appeal to a broad range of people, and be uplifting and stimulating. Artistic creativity and interpretation that speaks to Golden's heritage and natural setting is encouraged. The PAC has identified general themes that can be enhanced, including recognition of local indigenous peoples, pioneer women, geographic and geologic setting, playfulness and whimsey, and nature. Materials should be durable and reflect anticipated public interaction. The park can be windy, and artists should consider this environmental factor in their designs.
The project budget range is $92,000 including concept design, fabrication, artist fee, travel, installation, and all other project-related expenses for two pieces of art. Applicants must submit at least three images or drawings of proposed artwork, three images of past work, a letter of interest, current artist resume emphasizing public art projects, a timeline for art development and installation, and an estimated project budget. The call is open to all artists and artist teams 18 years and older; experience creating public art is preferred. Selection will be based on creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, relationship to theme and site, long-term maintenance, durability, and impact on park design and operations. The final location must be approved by both the PAC and the City Parks and Recreation Board.
