UHS Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center Original Art Call

Design Studio Blue Art Services, a full-service art consulting firm specializing in healthcare, is seeking original artwork on behalf of UHS for a new 5-story hospital tower. This call is for 29 original art locations across four themes: DC Parks and Landmarks (11 locations), Oxon Run Park (5 locations), Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens (5 locations), Anacostia River (5 locations), and DC Landmarks and Architecture (3 locations). Both existing and site-specific artworks will be considered. Applicants should submit images of work that apply to the project's needs. Site-specific art proposals are allowed but not required.

Art specifications require work that is peaceful, joyful, relaxing, engaging, and conveys pride in location. Artwork should capture the magnificence of nature and celebrate it rather than simply document it. Work should have visual interest through texture, color, depth, shadow, and line. Avoid imagery that is boring, flat, dark, or foreboding; depicts death or dying; features high noon skies without clouds, dark evening images, empty benches, or just clouds. Avoid large murals with oversized objects, florals with dead leaves, and landscapes with random people or cars. Seek dramatic sunrise and sunset skies. In high-visibility areas, consider collage, triptych, or 3D artwork. 3D work should not protrude more than 4 inches from the wall or be made of fragile or jagged materials. All media will be considered. Eventual artwork will need a wipeable surface; the studio will work with artists on solutions within their style.

Applications must include an artist statement, images qualifying the artist for this project, price range for shown works, and artist location (ward if in DC). Artists must live or work in the Washington DC region and be able to create site-specific work within the next 12 months. Selected artists will be contacted by June 1, 2024. Completed artworks are due November/December 2024. Submit 1-10 images.
