About This Call
The University of Florida is seeking artists to create a site-specific work of art for the Data Science and Information Technology Building, an interdisciplinary hub housing the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and the Informatics Institute. The building features a 7-floor open stairwell "spine" connecting informal gathering spaces and department branding areas.
The art budget is $100,000 for a site-specific work. Up to 4 finalists will receive $1,000 honoraria to visit the site and create and present a site-specific proposal, with a separate travel stipend potentially available. The project timeline includes finalist notification in summer 2021, site visit in fall 2021, proposals due spring 2022, substantial completion in winter 2022, and building occupancy in summer 2023.
Priority locations for art include: Main Lobby, Collaborative Spine (open stairwell with suspended art consideration), Entry Wall (19' x 11' and 10'6" x 11'), Elevator Alcoves (18' x 10'6" x 10'2"), Glass Conference Room walls (26'6" x 10'), and South Lawn exterior areas (two 16' x 55' spaces). Applicants must meet at least two of the following criteria: works in private, public, corporate, or museum collections; received awards, grants, or fellowships; completed other public commissions on a similar scale; or participated in exhibitions at major museums or galleries. Required materials include a letter of interest, professional resume with emphasis on public art experience, and 10-20 digital images (first five images used in blind review). Up to 6 video or audio files may be submitted, with each counting as one image. International artists are eligible.
