Tubac Center of the Arts: Threads

"Threads" is an exhibition presenting the versatility and innovative use of fiber in contemporary art. Historically, fiber art has been viewed as "women's work" through sewing, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Contemporary artists have moved beyond these gender-specific perceptions with innovative approaches to using fiber materials in art. The exhibition welcomes submissions addressing gender-based perceptions of fiber art's historical context as well as work exploring relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines. Submissions will be considered for technique, skill, artistic content, and innovative use of fiber as an art medium. The exhibition is open to artists working in fiber, including but not limited to quilt art, weaving, mixed media fiber, felting, wearable art, garments, baskets, wall art, and sculptural 3D fiber art. Juror: Kay Khan.

Entry fee is $35 ($30 for TCA Members) for the first image, with $5 for each additional image up to 4 entries total ($3 each additional image for TCA Members). Up to 8 images may be submitted. Entries must be original works executed within the last 24 months and cannot have been previously shown at TCA. Reproductions or art not the original work of the artist are not permitted. All artwork must arrive in condition ready to professionally display or hang. If framed, work must be suitably matted in white, black, or neutral colors, simply framed, and firmly wired. Awards include Best of Show ($800), Award of Excellence ($500), Best Art Quilt ($300), Award of Merit ($200), and two Honorable Mention awards ($100 each). All work must be for sale; TCA retains a 40% commission. Jury notifications will be sent September 16, 2013. Shipped art is due by October 14, 2013, and hand-delivered art by October 14, 2013. The opening reception is October 18, 2013, 5-7pm. The exhibition closes November 17, 2013. Unsold work will be shipped back to the artist after the close of the exhibition; artists must provide a preprinted, prepaid shipping label.
