About This Call

Troy Main Street invites sculptors to submit proposals for the 2023 Sculptures on the Square event, the 11th biennial exhibition in this series that began in 2003. The theme is "Wind and Water," and sculptors are encouraged to freely interpret this theme, though proposals do not have to meet it. The event will display up to 25 sculptures on the sidewalks of downtown Troy from June 16 to October 1, 2023.

Sculptures must not exceed 5 feet wide x 5 feet deep x 8 feet tall and will be displayed outdoors for the duration of the event. Sculptures can be free-standing or placed on pedestals. Sculptures requiring special placement such as locking into concrete or ground must have this information clearly stated in the proposal. All artwork must be family- and community-friendly in design, nature, and content. Selected artists will receive a $1,500 USD stipend covering location costs, shipping to and from Troy, insurance, and attendance at the Opening Gala if desired.

Applications must include artist name, mailing address, email, website, resume or CV demonstrating a history of on-budget and on-schedule public art projects (or exhibited artwork for first-time public art proposals), a creation and installation schedule, and either photographs of existing work or detailed conceptual drawings for new work showing size, scale, details, and installation methods. Entries will be reviewed by a jury including Sculptures on the Square committee members and community representatives based on adherence to community- and family-friendly content, appropriate size, and adequate budget, schedule, and installation details meeting city requirements. The selection committee reserves the right to reject delivered artwork if the final work fails to adhere to proposed specifications. This opportunity is open to resident American and legal resident artists and artist teams residing and working in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Applications are due December 5, 2022 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time.
