About This Call

Artworks Trenton Inc., in coalition with non-profit, local and state government partners, is commissioning a permanent public art painted mural for the Route 1/129 underpass in downtown Trenton. The mural will be installed on the approximately 15' by 200' North wall and adjacent angled walls of the underpass, located along Market Street east of South Stockton Street.

This opportunity is open to regional artists. The mural must be limited maintenance and suitable for an environment subject to vibration, salt, grit, dirt, rain, snow, and annual freezing temperatures. Artists or collaborative teams must provide design, fabrication/construction, project coordination and management, artwork transportation, and installation services. All artists will be required to comply with state and city prevailing wage and subcontracting guidelines.

Submissions must include a letter summarizing interest and experience in public art creation, with at least 3 references (name, phone, email) where similar work has been installed. Applicants should also submit resume, photographs/images (minimum 4, maximum 8) of public art installations, website links, and other pertinent information. Examples must be similar to this project. Artworks will conduct an initial review to confirm all requirements are met, then submit compliant EOIs to the Art Selection Committee for review and voting. The Committee will select 3 to 6 artists to proceed to the Proposal Submission Phase. Evaluation criteria include artistic excellence, appropriateness of materials and examples for public thoroughfares, experience to undertake the project, and preference for artists with ties to Trenton and New Jersey. Submissions will also be evaluated based on stated interest in involving local Trenton youth, schools, and communities in the design and execution of the mural project.
