Trauma-In-Place: Chautauqua National Juried Exhibition

EKU Giles Gallery, in partnership with EKU Libraries, School of Art & Design, and the Institute for Creative & Collaborative Arts, is accepting submissions for Trauma-In-Place: Chautauqua National Juried Exhibition, scheduled for October 5 - November 3, 2023. The exhibition derives its title from the cold war era idiom "shelter-in-place," which experienced an unfortunate resurrection amid the pandemic, escalating mass shootings, increased natural disasters, and ongoing global conflict. Trauma-In-Place provides an open-ended exhibit platform for artists working in the United States that inclusively explore trauma as a universal human experience. The exhibition encourages broad interpretation on how art and artists can help us analyze, reconcile, and heal from trauma. Submissions may investigate discrimination, climate change, ecology, immigration, refugees, war, colonization, generational trauma, mental health, food insecurity, surviving violence, safe housing, and recovery, love, autonomy, and rebirth.

The exhibition will be juried by Azucena Trejo Williams, Associate Professor of Art & Design at Campbellsville University. Entry deadline is August 27, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. The entry fee is $35.00, allowing a minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 entries per artist or collaborative group. Artists may submit up to 3 images, 3 audio files, and/or 3 video files (minimum 1 total sample required). The exhibition is open to all artists and designers over the age of 18 residing in the US. All media, genres, and disciplines are welcome. Work must be original and completed in the last 4 years. Work previously exhibited at EKU Giles Gallery is ineligible.

Notifications will be sent September 3. Shipping dates are September 20-26, with hand delivery available September 25-26. Installation occurs September 27 - October 4. A public reception and juror talk are scheduled for Thursday, October 5 at 6-8 p.m. and 5-6 p.m., respectively. Three awards of $300.00 each will be selected by the juror and announced at the public reception. All costs related to transportation, shipping, and insurance are the responsibility of the exhibitor. EKU Giles Gallery does not take commission on sales resulting from inclusion in the exhibit.
