About This Call

This is a request for proposals for a music-themed mural to be located on the west face of the City of Dayton Transportation Center Garage in Downtown Dayton, bounded by Jefferson, Fourth, St. Clair, and Stone streets. The mural will be installed on the inset cement block walls along Jefferson Street, across from the future Levitt Pavilion site. The proposed mural shall encompass at least the center of the three bays, with the center bay approximately 389 square feet in area (glass block windows not included). The mural should reflect the spirit of music, musicians, and musical performance, with inclusion of Dayton's rich musical past, present, and future highly encouraged.

Eligibility: Any amateur or professional artist or designer age 18 and older is eligible to apply. Artists under 18 may apply as part of a team with at least one member 18 or older. Applicants must have primary residence within a 40-mile radius of downtown Dayton. Submissions can be made by individuals, groups, classes, or teams. The submission fee is $10 per application. Three semi-finalists will be selected to submit final designs. If selected, artists must be available for consultation with K12's mural team in early November 2017 and sign an agreement with project organizers.

Proposals must include: application with complete contact information, proposed site design as high-resolution .jpg (up to three images, one rendered to scale), résumé or brief biography with references, one to three work samples, artist statement (one-page maximum) describing design vision and creative approach, and $10 application fee. Applicants may submit designs only or include qualifications to install the mural. Design guidelines favor flat paint application with palettes of 10 or fewer colors, designs applicable within reasonable timelines, and designs that build a sense of place with connection to Dayton. Semi-finalists receive $125 stipend; the selected artist receives $2,500 stipend. Timeline: Submission deadline October 9, 2017; notification of semi-finalists October 13, 2017; final design deadline October 23, 2017; notification of design selection October 27, 2017; project production October 30-November 10, 2017.
